'Twas the Night Before Sellers' Christmas 2008

I just found this poem I wrote in 2008 as an evite, inviting family over for Christmas morning:

‘Twas the morning of Christmas and all through the house
Not one of my creatures were yet scurrying about.
Were they actually asleep?  I must still be dreaming.
Please, God, make it last ten more minutes, I’m pleading!

What’s that? My full bladder! But the floor, oh the creaking!
It’ll wake them. I’ll ignore it. I want to keep sleeping.
Ah this moment-just a glimpse-of peace, of quiet…
Alright fine! I’ll tiptoe! I have to just try it.

I lean ever so gently, a toe touches the floor.
SLAM-rattle BA-Boom-BOOM opens the boys’ bedroom door!
The cry starts from the nursery, feet pitter-patter down the hall,
Isn’t that how it goes: Hit the deck, there in the halls!?!

When from the nursery there arose a familiar clatter,
I no longer run frantic to see what’s the matter.
They tore open the curtains, baby’s now blind by the flash.
Toys plummet into the crib - was his head under that crash?

More rapid than eagles, Daddy soars into battle.
He whistled and shouted hoping this time it would matter.
It’s a pile-on and bear hug, is baby still breathing?
There’s prancing and pawing and kicking and squealing.

"Now Asher! Now Dancer! My Prancer and Villain!
Two culprits, on cue, did a number on Gideon.
From the top of the stool and o’er the crib wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

No fear in their eyes, with excitement they’re screaming,
“Hi Daddy, hol’ me!” Their faces just beaming.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
A vision I’ll carry with me year after year:

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his shoe,
Red nose and round belly - St. Nick, is it you?
2 reindeer in tow and one miniature elf,
I laughed when I saw them, in spite of myself.

So if you’re up for some entertainment this year,
And don’t mind the extra noise you’ll get around here,
Gift destruction will begin at promptly 8:30
We’ll do our best to hold them back, but you’d better hurry.

We’ll have eggs & egg nog, a yummy brunch, too,
We’ll roll out of bed and put coffee on for you.
PJ’s----morning breath----hair all in a tangle,
Here starts the ole’ Sellers’ Christmas morning jingle-jangle.

Christmas Eve you’ll relax, sweet dreams in your head,
Think of us while we wrestle our boys into bed.
Our wish we’ll recite, tucking them in extra tight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a silent night!”
